The loss of our beloved owner and founder

The loss of our beloved owner and founder

It is a sad time here at Mountain Harbour.
With deepest regrets we announce the the passing of our beloved owner and founder Terence W. Hill. Terry, along with his wife Mary have been providing a clean, safe and comfortable place to stay for thru hikers since 2003. As well as shuttling thousands of hikers to all points on the trail. He will surely be missed.

Dave Smith’s AT Experience

Dave Smith’s AT Experience

Dave Smith’s AT Experience

For as many hiker’s that hike the Appalachian trail, there are as many reasons to take on the challenge.

This video tells the story of Dave’s experience with the Appalachian Trail. The video also reveals his personal motivation for taking on the challenge, as well as the personal rewards of his achievment. Dave is a long time friend of Mountain Harbour, and we wish him nothing but success in his next adventure.

Dave Smith is not a pastor but he does believe that people seeking God don’t always do it in churches. Smith himself was feeling lost when he stumbled onto the Appalachian Trail, but his experience there helped him find his faith again, and led him to offer counseling to other hikers as a chaplain for The United Methodist Church. He took us along to the place where so many find spiritual rest.

The first time Dave Smith hiked the trail, he raised money for pediatric cancer research in memory of his grandson, Walker. The walk in 2014 was in support of a Holston Conference fund to keep a United Methodist trail chaplain on the Appalachian Trail.  The Holston Conference spiritually supports the Appalachian Trail Chaplain program but all money is raised from individuals who share a love of hiking and a commitment to taking The United Methodist Church outside the walls.

Elk River Falls

Elk River Falls

Beautiful Waterfall!

Address: Elk River Road  Elk Park,   NC   28622

elk river falls 2

Elk Falls is the most impressive waterfall from a sheer volume standpoint in NE Tennessee/North Carolina border area. The plunge pool is extremely large and certain to be busy in the summer months. Downstream of the pool are a couple of short (~5 ft) cascades before the river levels out. Farther downstream is Twisted Falls. Note that topo maps identify waterfall as “Big Falls” and not Elk Falls. They are one and the same.
