It seems that every superlative has already been used to describe Mary, Terry, and their B&B plus hostel. A wall plaque in the house near the front door says to come as guests and leave as friends. Right on! My wife and I came to do some hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Mary shuttled us for a day hike and then Terry shuttled us for a three-day backpack. Most of the hikers are younger (we're both over seventy-five), but another couple we chatted with over Mary's incredible breakfast were there to drive parts of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Just staying there and watching the world go by from the shady front porch would also be a pleasant option. And if you like animals, as we do, there are more than just dogs and cats around: at least four goats, three horses, and a mule. What a fun and gracious place!

Mary made us most welcome. The room is clean and comfortable. Breakfast is extensive -- more than we could ever eat and plenty of choices. The only down side at all is that we have to share the bathroom with two other rooms. The mountains are lovely. There aren't a lot of interesting places to eat around there, but we go to contra dance, so food isn't uppermost.

What a beautiful gem tucked away in the North Carolina Highlands. My wife and I stayed here on both ends of a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail. Mary is a fabulous innkeeper, her breakfasts are unbelievable, and we were made to feel like we were staying with family. Shuttles are available to many nearby locations to start hikes or to go to town for food or supplies. The entire property is perfectly maintained, and fits in so well to surrounding mountains.

We arrived to a warm welcome and cookies. Our room was very clean, smelled great, comfortable. The bathroom was spotless. Great hosts. Breakfast was amazing, my husband said we can never stay at a hotel again after this wonderful b and b. No more continental breakfasts for him. Now I just have to learn to cook banana pancakes as good as we ate Sat morning. Such a great price.

This was my first b&b and I must say I couldn't have asked for a better experience. My girlfriend and I had the Jefferson suite and it is big and comfortable with its own bathroom.
The wonderful breakfast gives you plenty of energy for hiking and the huge comfortable bed is perfect for a afternoon nap.
Mary,Terry,Shannon and David are great host, I can't wait for my next visit.

I've stayed in their hostel on three separate occassions. This is undoubtedly one of the jewels of the AT. Mary is outgoing and a pleasure to visit. The hostel is great for section hikers such as my group. We plan to return each year for our traditional Roan Mountain hike.

My wife and I spent Christmas at Mountain Harbour. Mary and Terry hosted us to one of the most relaxing Christmas's we have ever had. The only thing that I can add to all of the 5+ star reviews is that I know it is even better at Christmas. The house and yard were decorated with Christmas lights with a beautiful Christmas Tree in the living room. Our meals were home cooking fantastic.
Thanks Mary and Terry for such a beautiful Christmas. P.S. Thanks for send us the water bottle and filter that we forgot. We would have been happy to come and get it. We hope to see you soon.

I stayed in the hiker hostel in September of 2014 during my southbound thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, and roughly 3 weeks later at the Bed and Breakfast after completing the Trail on my way home. As a thru-hiker having stayed in many hostels from Maine to Georgia, Mountain Harbour was absolutely a highlight of the journey. On the way back home staying at Mountain Harbour in their bed and breakfast may have ruined me for life, because now I believe I have an impossible standard for anyone else to meet. Mary is arguably the warmest motherly figure you could imagine. I plan on traveling back from Colorado to visit, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I stayed in the hiker hostel while thru hiking SOBO in 2011. This was the best breakfast I've ever had! I dream of returning someday and reliving that experience!
The owners are very friendly and helpful, and the accommodations for hikers are very comfortable!

After injuring my knee earlier this year (April, 2015), I stayed at Roan Harbour. They made an incredible horrible experience (hurting my knee and ending my hike) bearable. They bent over backwards for me, and I appreciate it. Now that I'm ready to get back on the trail to train up for my next hike, it seems to me a no brainer to start at Roan Harbour.

We stayed in Mountain Harbour's Jefferson Room and had a wonderful experience. The entire house was exceptionally clean and very well appointed. The decor was beautiful and all the little touches were so appreciated.
Mary and Terry were both so hospitable and the breakfast was everything we had heard it would be! What a wonderful way to get ready for a section hike on the AT. The other guests and Doug were all eager to share their experiences and made for a delightful breakfast. And the fact that there were so many breakfast options that I could eat gluten-free while my husband did not have to was simply amazing!
Then we took advantage of being shuttled to our starting point on the trail. This is a fantastic service to utilize! And we never had to worry about our car as it was safely tucked away in the parking lot at Mountain Harbor until we got back at the end of the week. And being able to hike right back to the house was a wonderful way to end a great hike!
We highly recommend Mountain Harbour and plan on returning ourselves!

This was by far more than I expected. We stayed in the Jefferson room and it was awesome, it has an oversized Jacuzzi and very large restroom with a shower that in the morning I didn't want to get out of from the powerful jets, but the aroma of the food made me get out and down I went to watch so much wonderful food keep coming out. It was the most amazing food I believe I've got to enjoy and want everyday for breakfast. I would recommend this adventure to anyone. So beautiful and breathtaking.

Our children gave us a 50th wedding anniversary gift for two nights at the wonderful Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast. David, Shannon and Mary made us feel right at home and part of the family. Each morning, the gourmet breakfast was awesome. At our first breakfast, Shannon told us to be first in line and she introduced us and told the group that it was our 50th wedding anniversary celebration. We were greeted with applause and congratulations from many of the hikers, who were very friendly. We look forward to a return trip to the bed and breakfast and the scenic area.

This is my 4th visit to Mountain Harbour Hostel and B&B. David, Shannon and Mary are always the perfect Hosts. I first met them in 2013 while hiking the AT and was introduced to a very clean Hostel and sensational buffet breakfast. They have earned the title of "Best Breakfast on the AT" however I would be hard pressed to rate any breakfast I have had in my travels around the word as better. Last year My wife joined me for a hike down Roan mountain. David shuttled us to Carvers Gap and we spent two lovely days at the B&B. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable, and in the early morning hours you are awakened with the luscious smells of pastries and breads wafting up the stairs and teasing you with the delights to come. This year they even invited a small group of us to join them for an evening mother's day cookout. Once again the dining was superb. If you are ever in the area of Roan, do yourself a favor and visit one of the best unknown accommodations anywhere. This secret won't be hidden much longer.
