From Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, the Appalachian
Trail
wanders
the ridges and valleys of the Appalachian mountain ranges for more
than 2,172 miles. Trails do more than connect one point to another.
They are an invitation, a promise of possibilities, and a re-connection
with nature.
They
provide a glimpse of an earlier time. Totaling nearly one thousand
miles, Tennessee
State Parks' trails mirror the state's great diversity and offers
an incredible mixture of outdoor recreational opportunities. Roan
Mountain State Park encompasses 2,006 acres of southern Appalachian
forest at the base of 6,285 foot Roan Mountain. Park elevation ranges
from 3,000 feet in the valley to around 3,700 feet on surrounding
ridges. Grandfather Mountain
is located on US Highway 221, two miles north of Linville, North
Carolina, and one mile south of the Blue Ridge Parkway (milepost
305). Each autumn, more than a million people will drive the Blue
Ridge Parkway. The most vivid, long-lasting colors are found
where a dozen or more kinds of trees may change color at slightly
different times over the fall season. This display can be found
in many settings along your drive. Sycamore
Shoals Historic Area is open from daylight to dark each day.
